How much wallpaper do I need?

Measuring for wallpaper is not simply floor-to-ceiling times width. Wallpaper hangs in full-height strips, so what matters is how many whole strips you can cut from a roll and how much length each strip loses to the pattern repeat. Round the wrong way and you are one strip short with nothing left to cut from.

This calculator does that arithmetic for you. Enter your room once and every wallpaper, border and mural on the site will tell you the exact quantity to order for it.

How the calculator works

  1. Pick the room. Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or anything you name yourself. Your progress saves as you go.
  2. Enter the walls. Set the ceiling height once and it carries to every wall. Add each wall width, and override the height on any wall that differs.
  3. Add doors and windows. Openings are placed at standard sizes and can be dragged into position on a 2D view of each wall. Only full-height openings are deducted, because a window leaves wallpaper above and below it that still has to be cut from a strip.
  4. Open any product. Choose "How Many Rolls Do I Need?", pick your saved room, and the quantity fills in ready to add to the cart.

What the estimate accounts for

  • Pattern repeat. Each strip is rounded up to the next full repeat so the pattern lines up across seams.
  • Strips per roll. Rolls are counted by how many whole wall-height strips they yield, not by area, because the offcut at the end of a roll is usually too short to reuse.
  • A spare strip. At least one extra strip is included by default so a single mis-cut does not leave you short. You can change that allowance if you prefer.
  • Trim allowance. Extra length is added at the top and bottom of every strip for trimming to the ceiling and baseboard.

Order it all at once

Almost everything we sell is discontinued closeout stock, so what is on the shelf is all there is -- it cannot be reordered when it runs out. Buy the full quantity for your room in one go. Coming back later for one more roll usually means a different dye lot, or nothing at all.
